Wise Women: Jazz Composer Showcase
Wise Women: Jazz Composer Showcase
This Jazz Appreciation Month, we’re celebrating the creativity and innovation of Philly’s women in jazz. Join us at the Black Squirrel Club for a night of all-original music featuring Lora Sherrodd, Bell Thompson, and Shawntae Atenzia Cerda, bringing fresh perspectives to a 100-year-old art form.
About the Composers:
Philadelphia-based vocalist, lyricist, and composer Lora Sherrodd writes music rooted in the tradition of straight-ahead jazz, paired with thoughtful, singer-songwriter–inspired lyrics that resonate with contemporary audiences. Known for her knack for lyric writing, she has collaborated with pianist Elio Villafranca, with her lyrics featured on “I Belong to You” featuring Cécile McLorin Salvant, and with composer Ben Markley on Lora Sings Markley, reimagining instrumental works through voice.
Trumpeter and composer Bell Thompson writes music that draws from the traditions of swing and hard bop while showcasing her strong melodic voice. Her debut album of original music, Most Prized, highlights her fresh, personal approach to composition. A graduate of Temple University and the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, Bell brings a dynamic, expressive voice to every stage.
Atenzia is a vocalist and composer writing original music that lives somewhere between modern jazz, hip hop, soul, and pop. Her work focuses on groove, texture, and melodic storytelling, drawing from different musical influences without staying tied to one tradition. In her music, the voice often moves beyond lyrics and functions like an instrument by using syllables and wordless melodies to create rhythm and atmosphere. Her compositions explore space and feel by creating layered sound while remaining grounded in curiosity and creative freedom.
